Property taxes are due by June 15

If you paid 50 percent of your property taxes earlier this year, remember to pay the rest by June 15 in order to avoid any interest penalty. If you haven’t paid any of your property taxes yet, you are now accruing interest due on the full amount.

In the state of Colorado, this interest penalty is set at 1 percent per month. This is “simple” interest, so the amount won’t change daily, as it does on bank loans or credit-card balances.

What this means is, if you pay your taxes one day late, say June 16, 1 percent will be added to your bill. If you wait to pay until July 1, then 2 percent will be added to your bill. In August, another 1 percent will be added, so now you would have to pay an additional 3 percent. The La Plata County Treasurer’s Office will not charge interest if the postmark is on or before June 15 for second-half payments.

You may also stop by the office to drop off your check, or go to the La Plata County website to pay by credit card or e-check. If you use the online payment option, our third-party vendor will charge you a fee.

Thank you to all who pay your taxes on time.

Allison Morrissey, La Plata County Treasurer
