Fort Lewis College’s soccer teams were hungry for wins Sunday in early-season conference games.
The Skyhawks’ men’s team won emphatically, 4-0, at Colorado State University-Pueblo, as four players scored in the match played in Pueblo. The FLC women met New Mexico Highlands on a neutral field in Taos, New Mexico, and the Skyhawks came away with a 1-0 win. Jessica Singleton scored in the ninth minute with an assist from Jenna Brown and Mia Castaneda.
The FLC men (1-2-3, 1-0-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) scored two goals in each half, and goalkeeper Peter Byrne recorded four saves to earn a shutout, his second of the season.
Churchill Onumonu got the FLC attack going in the fifth minute with a penalty-kick goal. Max Fuentes tacked on the second goal of the match in the 39th minute. The scoring resumed in the 56th minute when Ryan Lee found the back of the net, and Nathan Roberts was assisted by Ty Lang for the game’s final goal in the 66th minute. It was the first goal of the season for all four of the Skyhawks’ scorers.
CSU-Pueblo (0-6, 0-2 RMAC) changed goalkeepers in the 65th minute. Tyler Harvey allowed three goals and made two saves. Erich Frey made one save and allowed one goal.
The FLC women (1-3-1, 1-1 RMAC) moved the ball well in the first half, head coach Jimmy Hall said. He was happy with some important saves made by Ali Miller, who made seven stops in goal for the Skyhawks against the Cowgirls (0-4-2, 0-1-1 RMAC)
Next up for the FLC women is a home set against Regis and Metro State on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
The men will return home for a big weekend against Westminster College and No. 6 Colorado Mesa on Friday and Sunday.
The Skyhawks picked up their first RMAC win Saturday night inside their home Whalen Gymnasium.
FLC (6-4, 1-1 RMAC) bounced back from a five-set loss Friday to Black Hills State with a five-set win (25-19, 16-15, 23-25, 25-20, 15-12) Saturday against South Dakota Mines.
The team hit for an identical .174 percentage. Bailey Longacre and Maddie LeBlanch each had 14 kills for the Skyhawks, while Mikkella Reese had a match-high 21 for the Hardrockers. Kendra Swackenberg had a match-high 51 assiss for FLC and also made a c0-team-high 17 digs along with Megan Graefe.
FLC will hit the road Friday and Saturday this week to face UC-Colorado Springs and Metro State.
The biggest women’s college golf tournament in Four Corners history is set to begin Monday at Hillcrest Golf Club.
FLC will host the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament in the spring, and a regional preview tournament is set to be played Monday and Tuesday. Nineteen teams will join FLC in this week’s tournament in Durango.
“This is going to be the biggest individual stroke women’s golf tournament ever hosted in the Four Corners,” said FLC head golf coach Guy Begay in a news release. “The tournament is a preview for the NCAA Women’s Golf West Regional that we’ll host in May. It’s exciting that many of the top teams in the West will be here and plenty of great golfers who are very talented.”
