BHS Earth Club holding fundraiser

In celebration of Earth Day, the Bayfield High School Earth Club will show the award-winning documentary "Bag It" at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 21 at the Pine River Library.

Americans use 60,000 plastic bags every five minutes, and many are thrown away without much thought.

The club will sell reusable Chico Shopping Bags and other Chico sustainable items such as bamboo utensil sets and travel bags at the event. They will use the funds to ship books they have collected to help open a community library in the country of Ghana.

County seeks planning commission member

The La Plata County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified individuals to serve on the planning commission.

This commission acts in an advisory capacity to the Board of County Commissioners with respect to land-use planning.

Members must be at least 18 years old and must be residents of La Plata County.

Library hosting talk on food insecurity

Leading up to Earth Day, Pine River Library will host a program on the future of the world's food supply and uneven access to it, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 20. Dick White, professor emeritus of astronomy at Smith College, member of Durango City Council, and sustainability advocate, will give a presentation entitled "Food Insecurity: An Inconvenient Truth - Global to Local Perspectives."

White will discuss the impact that climate change and a projected population of 10 billion will have on the finite resources of our world and our local community.
