Skyhawks records fall at Air Force

Brandon, Rogers, Stansberry latest to set school marks

The Fort Lewis College women’s indoor track and field team posted three more school records last weekend at the United States Air Force Invitational.

In the team’s first of two days competing against top Division-I talent, the Skyhawks knocked down three school records. Sydni Brandon, Fiona Rogers and Audrey Stansberry are the latest FLC athletes to etch their names in the record book.

Brandon’s 24th-place 60-meter dash time of 7.96 seconds broke her own previous school-record mark of 8.04 seconds.

Rogers recorded a mark of 1.45 meters in the high jump to break Devin Kroeker’s record of 1.41 meters, while Audrey Stansberry’s weight throw toss of 8.57 meters bested Gabrielle Silva’s record by more than a meter and a half.

“It was a solid day with some great performances as we broke three school records,” Fort Lewis indoor track and field interim head coach Katarina Marks said in a news release. “Before the meet started, I told the ladies to do two things at this meet: use the competitions of the Division-I schools to push you to do your best, and two, to learn from those other athletes. That’s exactly what they did. It was a good start to 2017 and I’m looking forward to seeing what these ladies can do the rest of the season and the improvements they can make.”

Avery McCreary-Novak came in 29th in the 60 in 8.22 seconds, while Jazmyne Reining (8.35) finished 31st and Kroeker (9.12) came in 33rd.

Kroeker also finished 38th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 31.59 seconds. Quinlyn Borneo crossed the finish line 29th in 1:03.83 and Payton Kee (1:05.61) finished 31st.

Emma Alaimo’ 4.77 meter effort in the long jump was good for a 23rd-place finish, and Kee was right behind with a 4.68 meter leap.

On the second day of action, Carly Wilborn earned the team’s only point with a ninth-place, 5:44 mile run.

Alaimo finished 14th in the triple jump with a mark of 10.51 meters.

Victoria Fagan led the Skyhawks with 21st-place shot put toss of 8.90 meters. She was followed by Shanell Leekya (8.69 meters), Audrey Stansberry (8.26 meters) and Fiona Rogers (6.59 meters).

Fort Lewis will look to set more high marks Feb. 4 at the Western State Alumni Open.
