Every wrestler Bayfield High School brought to the Sand Devil Classic won at least one match Friday in Page, Ariz.
Three went 3-0 to advance into Saturday’s semifinals.
“We had a good day (Friday),” said BHS head coach Todd McMenimen, whose Wolverines hosted Pagosa Springs on Thursday night. “Everybody wrestled as well as I’d expect them to wrestle. We looked tough.”
Cody Speece at 113 pounds, Ryan Nava at 120 pounds and Colter McMenimen at 138 pounds remain alive with opportunities for first-place medals.
Taylor Winch (132 pounds) and Gus Roberts (145 pounds) went 1-1 on Friday and can wrestle to a third-place finish Saturday.
Clay Crawford was knocked out of the tournament after he took a knee to his eye socket during his quarterfinal match and temporarily lost consciousness.
“It’s just an unfortunate thing that happens sometimes,” coach McMenimen said.
The tournament will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday.
“We were all pretty impressed with how we did (Friday),” coach McMenimen said. “It was a real strong start to the tournament.”
