After one day at the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 4A/5A Southwestern League Track and Field Championships, the Durango High School boys and girls have already posted winning efforts.
The Demons’ girls were in second-place, 11 points behind Montrose, after the five events that made up the first day of action at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. The Durango boys were in fourth after the first five events.
Durango’s girls team was led by wins from Bekah Moenning and Jessica Lee. Moenning’s leap of 16 feet, 3.25 inches was best in the long jump finals and gave Durango 10 points. Lee’s pole vault mark of 9-4 was best by more than two feet, as fellow Demons Shaylan Garrett and Danielle Lee took second and third, respectively.
Breann Hawman also contributed to the point total with a fourth-place finish in the discus throw after a heave of just over 105 feet. In the girls 800-meter run, Maggie Wigton finished fifth in 2 minutes, 36.41 seconds, while Sarah Smagacz (2:41.30) was seventh and Anna Smagacz (2:41.37) was eighth.
In the 3,200-meter run, Marit May finished sixth in 13:48.57, and Elli Trussel’s 14:40.88 time was good for eighth.
The DHS boys were led by Orion Clay, who took third in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 8 inches. A sixth-place finish by Coltin Gallegos in the 800-meter run and ninth-place from David Lee in the triple jump also helped the Demons’ cause. Camden Garland cleared 12 feet in the pole vault to take first place with Durango competitors Matthew McLain and Dylan Baken tying for second.
The SWL Championships will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday.
