100 years ago: “Last night’s Southern was delayed twice while the crew removed pebbles from the track. Yesterday morning’s Silverton train encountered similar difficulties.”

75 years ago: “Concerted efforts were being made to get the projected flying school at Fort Lewis College underway, through obtaining a class of 10 students for the course. The school has been approved as the sponsor of a civil pilot training program under the Department of Commerce.”

50 years ago: “Fire, which apparently started in a front booth, did extensive damage to the Trail Cafe, 678 Second Ave., early this morning. ... Flames apparently swept up the wall from the booth, through the ceiling and into the attic.”

25 years ago: “Fall began with overcast skies in the Durango area. The first dusting of snow for the season appeared on the La Plata Mountains Sept. 18. World Mountain Bike Championship organizers report that had the races been held a few days later than they were (Sept. 11-16) the upper part of the course at Purgatory Resort would have been wet with snow.”
