100 years ago: “Stock Inspector Sam Ethridge goes out to Dolores, where C. McBeth will load for shipment about 30 carloads of fat cattle. The stock is being shipped to Denver and is all contracted ‘stuff.’”
75 years ago: “District Judge J.B. O’Rourke ruled that the city of Durango had no right to refuse a building permit to Cliff Brice for a filling station at the corner of Sixth Street and Third Avenue, and declared he would issue a peremptory writ of mandamus, commanding the city to issue the permit.”
50 years ago: “Mayor Carl Bell is all set for a hearty breakfast. From President Mel Aber he’s already purchased tickets to the Kiwanis-sponsored pancake day. For $1 a head, and 50 cents for children, Aunt Jemima will dish up pancakes, and members of the Kiwanis Club will put out coffee, juice, sausage or bacon, and – best of all – it’s all you can eat.”
25 years ago: “Rain, which pelted Durango and surrounding areas, may help increase water storage in local reservoirs and reduce the impact of the drought that has plagued Southwestern Colorado the past two years. More rain fell on Durango from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday than normally falls on the city during the entire month of September.”
