And the West is History

This one-cent postcard shows an 8th Street and Fourth Avenue house in Durango. The postcard is part of the Nina Heald Webber Southwest Colorado Collection.

100 years ago: “There was much hilarity at the Elks Lodge last night. Three Pagosa Springs residents and two Ignacioites trod the mysterious trail that leads to the Secrets of Elkdom.”

75 years ago: “With at least 200 visiting DeMolays in Durango for the third day conclave, local boys are complaining because of the sudden dearth of available dates. They say there is such a thing as going too far with hospitality.”

50 years ago: “Have you ever shot a double-eagle on a 490-yard, par 5 golf hole? Don Burgess, Hillcrest Golf Pro, did it. During a practice round, he teed off at hole number one at Hillcrest, slamming the little white ball nearly 340 yards down the fairway.”

25 years ago: “Fort Lewis College is proposing a 5 percent increase in tuition for the 1988-89 school year in a budget package that will be presented to the State Board of Agriculture for approval. The increase marks the third time in a 1½ years that the college has asked for tuition increases. Last June, the Ag Board, FLC’s governing body, approved an 8.5 percent tuition increase.”
