100 years ago: “It will be wisdom for North Durango parents residing on Third Avenue to keep an eye out for ‘rattlers’ as several were killed in the section last year and they are showing up again this year. Safeguard the children.”
75 years ago: “At 8 a.m. the Animas River was at the highest stage since 1927, with 7,260 second feet of water rolling down. The river stage at that time was 6.17 feet at the Main Avenue Animas River Bridge.”
50 years ago: The Rocket, three miles south on U.S. Highway 550, was showing “The Horizontal Lieutenant” starring Jim Hutton and Paula Prentiss and “Astro-Nuts! The Three Stooges in Orbit.”
25 years ago: “The two men accused of bombing two Durango 3.2 bars in 1986, pleaded guilty in 6th Judicial District Court. The two were scheduled to go to trail in July. The pleas were made as part of an agreement with the District Attorney’s Office. Deputy District Attorney Jeff Wilson estimated the pleas will save La Plata County taxpayers between $30,000 and $40,000.”
