100 years ago: For the first time in many seasons Durango is going to have an old time Fourth of July celebration. There is going to be relay races, harness races, automobile races, ring tournaments, green horse races, farmers horse races, gentlemens driving races and other attractions too numerous to mention. Seven hundred and fifty dollars have been provided in prizes.
75 years Ago: According to recent information construction will start on the highway relocation project east of Bayfield on No. 160. When the relocation road is completed it will be 3.76 miles long; following the old highway for but a small part of that distance. While the project is under construction traffic will continue to use the old highway.
50 years ago: An advertisement read: Feel daisy fresh all summer with electric air conditioning. Youll feel younger and live better when it swelters outside ... with electric air conditioning in you home. You sleep better and appetites perk up too, with canyon-cool air electrically.
25 years ago: Polo is coming to Durango this summer, but the sport will be trying on clothes instead of riding a horse and hitting a ball. Fashion magnate Ralph Lauren has chosen an empty 6,000-square-foot building in Rio Grande land to join his chain of factory stores.
