And the West is History

100 years ago: “Thoroughbred stock – W. Henn, the well-known Missouri stock breeder, is headed this way with a car of short-horn and Hereford bulls, which will be offered for sale about the first of the week. If you are in the market, book your order at once with Wood and Morgan.”

75 years ago: “The Vallecito dam project below the confluence of the Vallecito and Pine rivers is definitely underway and gathering steam. Contractor Martin Wunderlich and his force of nearly 60 men are making time in clearing the dam site of timber and leveling up the land.”

50 years ago: SILVERTON – “The D&RGW will lay track to the middle of the intersection at Blair and 12th streets so that the narrow gauge train can make a more dramatic noonday entry into Silverton this summer. Formerly, the Silverton has backed into the city each day.”

25 years ago: “City-owned property next to Brookside Park should be rezoned to allow commercial development, the Durango Planning Commission said Monday in a 3-2 vote. The 1-acre parcel at 2301 Main Ave. has been the subject of a purchase offer from a fast-food franchise. Several residents want it kept as parkland.”
