And the West is History

100 years ago: “Lee Ayers, who recently underwent an operation on his knee, which was injured in a motorcycle accident, is able to be about on crutches.”

75 years ago: “Work is being completed on the temporary wooden bridge across the Florida River at Nelson’s sawmill. A steel bridge will be built later, as soon as steel for the job arrives. The old bridge collapsed when one of the county caterpillars attempted to cross it. No one was injured in the collapse, but luck was needed to avert it.”

50 years ago: “Water from Vallecito reservoir and soaked earth have brought La Plata County its first spring road troubles. Water released from the Vallecito dam washed out an approach to the temporary bridge across the Pine River at Columbus Bridge, and caused closing of that route to the recreation area.”

25 years ago: “The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit in Tribal Court seeking to reinstate a Southern Ute recall vote or hold a new election. The lawsuit charges that the Election Board erred in throwing out a ‘proxy’ in the Feb. 2 recall vote. The Election Board’s action changed the vote total to a tie, leaving Tribal Chairman Leonard Burch and four council members in office. ... Either a new election should be held or the original results reinstated.”
