Bayfield funding Roadrunner in 2018

$11,000 town commitment will provide two buses daily to Durango

The Bayfield Town Board is proposing to give Roadrunner Transit $11,089 for its 2018 budget.

Roadrunner is losing some of its funding from La Plata County, so Bayfield was asked to increase its funding to keep routes running between Bayfield and Durango.

Last year, the town provided $8,000 in funding.

"We're kind of picking up the slack," said Town Manager Chris La May. The number of runs will be reduced from three per day to two.

The proposed funding will be in the town's budget, which is up for public comment on Nov. 21.

No one spoke in favor of the Roadrunner funding at the Nov. 17 town board meeting, but respondents to an online survey did say they supported the service, La May said.

Also in 2018, the town will request proposals from companies to provide curbside recycling services. Those who want to use the recycling service would pay extra for it, instead of having it added to the monthly utility bill, La May explained.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, the town awarded its community development grants to the following organizations: Bayfield Early Education Program, $3,000; Axis Health for acute care services, $1,500; Bayfield Family Center $2,500; Community Connections $1,200; Pine River Shares, $2,500; Florida Aspen Club, $500; and La Plata Youth Family Service, $7.800. Some of those funds come from the town's law enforcement budget, La May explained.

There also is a vacant seat on the town board after Rachel Davenport moved outside of the town limits.

The board of trustees for the town is seeking a resident to fill the seat. Qualifications include residency in town for at least 12 months, must be a registered voter and at least 18 years of age. There are, at minimum, two meetings per month, held on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The person appointed to the position will fill out the remaining term of the vacated seat, which expires April of 2018. Trustees are compensated $100 per month.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest and resume to Town Clerk, Kathy Cathcart by Friday, Oct. 27. Letters should be addressed to Mayor and Board of Trustees, Town of Bayfield, 1199 Bayfield Parkway, PO Box 80, Bayfield, CO 81122.
