With a chance to power West Virginia Wesleyan College into the NCAA Division II Tournament's third round, former Bayfield High standout Keenan Moreta attempted a first-overtime header against East Stroudsburg University.
The match was held during second-round action on Nov. 16.
The goalie unfortunately made the save on what would be Moreta's last attempt of her first season with the Bobcats, based in Buckhannon, W.V. But with a 4-2 shootout triumph after the second overtime, Wesleyan upset the Atlantic Region's top-seeded East Stroudsburg Warriors to see another postseason phase.
Five days later, West Chester (Pa.) University won its sixth regional title with a 1-0 home win over WVWC to advance into the quarterfinals, finalizing Wesleyan's overall record for 2014 at a solid 13-5-3.
Moreta was held without a shot by West Chester. WCU held a slim 8-7 lead in shots in the match, and allowed only two Bobcat tries to score.
Nonetheless, Moreta's D-II debut was as productive as anyone could have hoped.
She was named the Mountain East Conference's Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the clincher Oct. 29 against Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia. And she added an insurance goal in a Nov. 2 win over Wheeling-based West Liberty University that ended the Bobcats' regular season.
Seeing action in all 21 matches and starting 15, she netted a team-leading seven goals (on 31 shots, 19 on goal) and notched one assist for a team-best 15 points. Four of her goals were match-winners.
Grand Valley State University of Michigan went on to win a repeat Division II NCAA championship on Dec. 6.
