Now that we are in November, it’s OK to start thinking about the holidays. The Durango Business Improvement District manages the Singing with Santa event. Singing with Santa is always held the day after Thanksgiving, which this year falls on Nov. 23.
Singing with Santa is downtown’s way of kicking off the holiday season. Santa comes to downtown and attendees follow him on Main Avenue to Buckley Park, where we light our Community Christmas Tree. Free photos are then available with Santa, but bring your own camera. Free hot chocolate and cookies are also available.
Singing with Santa is sponsored by TBK Bank. The event could not occur without their support. BID also thanks Eagle Crane for putting the lights up in the tree, and these local businesses: Carver Brewing Co., Durango Party Rental, Doubletree Hotel, Norton’s Catering, Durango Doughworks, Prairie Fire Percherons, McDonald’s and the city of Durango.
BID asks the community to arrive downtown at TBK Bank, located at 259 West 9th St., by 5:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23. Santa will arrive at 6 sharp. We will all follow Santa to Main Avenue, and then on Main to Buckley Park. On the way, we will sing Christmas carols.
After everyone arrives at Buckley Park, we will count down to the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree.
Once the tree is lit, free hot chocolate and cookies are served. The hot chocolate is donated by Carver. The cookies this year are donated by Norton’s and Doubletree. Durango Doughworks has sweetened things for us this year by offering donut holes! Durango Party Rental donates the containers that store the hot chocolate, and McDonald’s donates all the cups and lids. Children and families can have their photo taken with Santa, but remember to bring your own camera.
BID is holding a coloring contest for a ride in the stagecoach with Santa as it goes up Main. Pick up a coloring sheet at the Durango Welcome Center or TBK Bank, or download it from BID’s website: DowntownDurango.org/coloringcontest. Entries are due by Nov. 19.
BID is proud to continue this long-standing holiday tradition, and we look forward to kicking off the holidays with you and your family.
Another Durango tradition is Noel Night, the biggest shopping night of the year for downtown Durango. Noel Night is on Friday, Dec. 7, and actually takes place all day long.
Now in its 17th year, Noel Night is a family-friendly event where you can enjoy special offers, live music and entertainment, and delicious holiday treats! BID thanks Local First for organizing this great night of shopping fun every year.
We’ll see you in downtown this holiday season!
