DHS ties for 4th in first tournament

Durango High School junior Cory Gillespie had the low round for his team in the opening tournament of the year Monday. Gillespie shot a 2-over 73 to finish eighth overall in the 14-team tournament.

Feeling out the field in their first round of competitive golf this season, the Durango Demons were satisfied with the result.

Durango High School finished in a tie for fourth place after five players combined to shoot 231 on Monday at Bookcliff Golf Club in Grand Junction.

“It was the first time out, so we felt OK about it,” said DHS head coach Kirk Rawles.

DHS junior Cory Gillespie had the low round on the team Monday, shooting a 2-over-par 73 and finishing eighth overall. Cameron Barnhardt and Cy Spicer both followed with a 79, Daniel McElwain shot an 84, and Blake Ward rounded out the team with a 99.

“I know for sure Cameron felt he left a few shots out there, but we get to play again (Tuesday) and get a chance to see what is out there,” Rawles said.

Grand Junction won the 14-team tournament with a 211. Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction shot the low round with a 2-under 69.

Steamboat Springs finished in second place with a 219, and Montrose was third with a 288. DHS finished tied in fourth with Montezuma-Cortez.

“I think we will be right in the mix with those guys for the rest of the year,” Rawles said of the rest of the 4A competition.

DHS will pick up the clubs again Tuesday with a trip to The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction.
