Letters: Librarian shows how to address racism

Shelly Walchack has provided personal guidance for dealing with institutional racism.

First, she asked the question “What can I do?”

She conducted a systemic audit of her Pine River library’s systems to uncover possible instances in which racism might take place.

Then, she proposed institutional changes to each activity or process in order to reduce their exposure to racism.

If all of our institutions and businesses would undertake a similar audit and make the necessary changes – small though they might be – our society would make considerable progress to reducing racism.
