100 years ago: A bull elk that wandered down from the mountains after a winter storm hit the Animas Valley was found almost starved to death near Durango. The chance that the animal would live looked bleak.
75 years ago: Lloyd Barnes, who was in Denver representing the interests of the Durango chapter of Colorado Sportsmen Inc., informed local officers that funds for the construction of the Lyman fish-rearing pond near Bondad would depend on a bill “pending before the Legislature.”
50 years ago: An 18-year-old Durango student was sentenced to one week in the La Plata County Jail by Judge Jane Watts, after he was charged with drunkenness and disturbance in a public place earlier that week. He had been drinking that day and started a fight outside of the Smiley building, which ended with him putting his fist through a window.
25 years ago: Durango Police Department reported that a man rode his bicycle through the front window of High Country Optical, 1010 Main Ave., and caused $200 in damage.
