Only one Durango Demon got a second chance, but she got a second loss, too.
Durango High School freshman Sarah Harrelson got her shot at the playback bracket at the CHSAA Class 4A Girls Tennis State Championships on Friday in Pueblo, but she lost 6-1, 6-3 to Belen Aseasia Vidal of Thompson Valley to end her state tournament run.
Harrelson got into playbacks when Round 1 opponent and defending state champion Payton Fielding advanced Friday to the finals.
Harrelson lost 6-0, 6-2 on Thursday after a lengthy rain delay.
“Better weather and better tennis (Friday),” first-year DHS head coach Laura Ehlers said in a text message to The Durango Herald.
The Demons’ other state qualifiers, No. 1 doubles team Kit Hackett and Meredith Nass, were bounced from the tournament with just one loss when its first-round opponent, Kaylee Pott and Annie Hertel of Valor Christian, lost their next match.
Hackett and Nass lost 6-2, 6-0 on Thursday, then Pott and Hertel lost 7-6, 7-5 to a Kent Denver team Friday, denying the Demons’ hopes of another playback bracket attempt.
State will wrap up with the finals today.
