It has been my pleasure to work as an election judge at most elections since I came to Durango 20 years ago.
This election day, I was at the polling center at the fairgrounds. It was an amazing day. We had a constant stream of voters, with some very long lines at times, but with no incivility. Every one was so focused on the idea of voting and very positive.
We registered and helped to vote an unusually large number of young people and first-time voters. It was an experience that renews one’s belief in American democracy.
Thank you to all the voters who came through our doors. You made our (very long) day at the polls worth it all. And a special thank you to the anonymous donor who had eight pizzas delivered to our polling place Tuesday afternoon.
The Domino’s delivery person showed up with pizzas for “the poll workers and voters at the fairground” from a person unknown. We set aside a couple of them for the poll workers who could not stop to eat, then set the remainder out for voters to pick up a slice as they left after voting. It was a welcome gift for those of us who were working and the many voters, both new and old, who were creating an epic election day for us all.
We are so lucky to live in this community that shows up and gives all the time. You make me proud to say I’m from Durango.
