100 years ago: “Sam Shoemaker, formerly superintendent of Mesa Verde Park, who returned from a trip of several months in California, came down from a visit to Mancos. He says the talk about his getting married is all rot.”
75 years ago: “Reliable reports from Silverton confirmed the previous rumor that the pumps had been pulled at the strike-bound Shenandoah-Dives mine with the removal of the pumps and other machinery from the lower levels of the mine, the levels are gradually filling up with seepage water. If the mine were to be reopened, at least three months would be required to drain the levels and get them in shape for work. Negotiations for settlement of the strike are at a standstill.”
50 years ago: “Rains that dropped from 1 to over 2½ inches of moisture over most of southwestern Colorado in the last few days caused some minor damage in isolated areas, but was considered a lifesaver for some crops and a definite help to the range land.”
25 years ago: “More than 225 people had signed up to buy irrigation water from the Animas-La Plata Project. The signed water petitions represent more than 80 percent of the acreage to be irrigated. ... The figures are significant because the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation can’t build the $380 million project unless a ‘substantial portion’ of the water is under contract.”
