Fort Lewis’ Rasmus Bach sweeps first week of RMAC awards

FLC junior wins Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week

Fort Lewis College junior Rasmus Bach takes pride in his effort at both ends of the floor. Monday, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rewarded him.

In the first week of the 2016-2017 season, Bach was recognized as the RMAC’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.

In Friday’s season-opening loss to West Texas A&M, Bach led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds. On Saturday, he led FLC again with 25 points in the team’s first win of the season, an 88-87 victory against Eastern New Mexico.

The versatile guard/forward is shooting 64 percent from the floor, a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range and 14-for-17 from the foul line.

“Rasmus is one of the elite two-way players in the RMAC,” Skyhawks head coach Bob Pietrack said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “The sky is the limit for this young man and he’s the ultimate team player. We’re extremely lucky to have him.”

The scary thing for opponents is the fact that Bach is still recovering from an offseason knee operation, and he’s just getting his feet back under him. Admittedly not at 100-percent quite yet, the former RMAC Freshman of the Year and second team all-RMAC selection as a sophomore is still a nightmare for opponents on both ends of the floor.

“What people don’t realize is that Rasmus was out for four months after getting his meniscus taken care of,” Pietrack said. “He’s only been back for three weeks. I think it was a scenario where he couldn’t play for awhile and realized how much he loves the game. He’s playing inspired basketball and really carried us at times during the first two games.”

Bach and Fort Lewis (1-1) will take on Colorado State University in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Fort Collins.
