Bayfield football team honored at Broncos game

CHSAA state champions recognized at Mile High

The Bayfield High School football team was honored for winning the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 2A Football Championship on Sunday in Denver.

The Wolverines were recognized for their accomplishments at half time of the Denver Broncos versus the San Diego Chargers game. The Wolverines went a perfect 12-0 on the season to win the championship when they beat Platte Valley on Nov. 28, 28-20.

This has been quite the season for Bayfield as head coach Gary Heide was named CHSAA Coach of the Year and senior quarterback Kelton McCoy was named CHSAA Player of the Year.

Bayfield had five players be named to the Class 2A All-State First Team that included McCoy, Zane Phelps, Taed Heydinger, Kyle Killough and Noah Loutherback, all of whom are seniors.

Sam Westbrook and Brody McGhehey were named to the Class 2A All-State Second Team.

This is Bayfield’s second state championship in school history. The first was in 1996.
