Christian hypocrites support president

A letter in the Herald accused people opposed to the noxious personality and inhumane policies of this criminal administration of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (“Hateful rhetoric is directed at president,” July 15).

Since evangelical Christians compose some of Mr. Trump’s angry, under-informed base, I present this quote – it’s from an old book that some Christians once held as sacred:

“But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.” (1 Corinthians 5:11).

It turns out that it’s not from just any old book! Christians claim these words are the very word of almighty God.

Is Trump sexually immoral and greedy? Without doubt. An Idolater and slanderer? Check. A swindler? Just ask the innumerable small businesses in the building trades whom Trump repeatedly cheated of their just wages. But the Bible isn’t through with Trump yet:

“Don’t oppress a foreigner, for you well know how it feels to be a foreigner, since you were foreigners yourselves in the land of Egypt” (Exodus 23:9) and that pesky Golden Rule thing: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18).

More words from their lord that Christians feel free to ignore.

Why have American Christians decided to follow Trump instead of following Christ? The answer confronts Christian conservatives each time they look in the mirror. The reflection gazing back is nothing more than that of a hypocrite.
