Durango area fishing report

Note: The area rivers fishing report as of June 8, courtesy of Duranglers Flies and Supplies.

Animas River: 5,140 cfs, falling, flows just peaked; The water is dirty and fishing is tough. Streamers are the best idea, especially in mornings and evenings. Stonefly nymphs and SJ worms are also a good option.

San Juan River in Colorado: 1,860 cfs, flows just peaked and are falling; Flows are rising and fishing will be tough. Big dark streamers and nymphs will be key right now. Look for hatches of stones and caddis soon.

San Juan River in New Mexico: 4,090 cfs, steady; Fishing is good right now with flows at 4,000, don't be scared. Worms, eggs and annelids will be on the menu. Otherwise, keep an eye out for solid midge and baetis hatches. An ant pattern may also be a good option.

Piedra River: 1,500 cfs, flows just peaked, falling; Flows will be high and the river off color. Fishing will be tough. Big dark stuff may find fish. You may want to wait a week or two.

Los Pinos River: 2,220 cfs below dam, recently increased; Flows are high. Look for fish to be holding close to shore out of the fast current. Big nymphs and streamers may be what you need.

Dolores River Below McPhee: 588 cfs, falling after a few days at 1,000 cfs; Midge and BWO hatches should hold strong but keep an eye out for PMDs and Hoppers as they show up early on the D. With higher water, fish mice and streamers.

Dolores River Above McPhee: 2,330 cfs, falling after peak flows a few days ago; The Upper Dolores is flowing hard from snow melt and is muddy. Nymphs and streamers will be the name of the game here.

Rio Grande: 1,200cfs at 30 mile, 3,48- at Wagon Wheel Gap, falling from peak flows a few days ago; Flows are rising with snowmelt. Stonefly, Caddis and nymphs will be your best bet fished in slow deep water. Streamers fished slow are also a good option. Watch for BWO hatches.

Florida River: 524 cfs, 648 below, falling above, recently increased below; Fishing the Lemon inlet may be good, it will be cold, though. Below the water is high and off color. Fish may hang close to the bank.

Creeks: Rising; Creek fishing is picking up with each day. Most creeks will be high and cold, but still fishable if you can access them.

Lakes: Pike fishing is prime time right now. Vallecito, Lemon, Navajo, Totten, and Puett are all open. The Pike bite is on, and trout are moving and grooving strong. Look for bass to start moving to streamers as well.
