Fort Lewis College lacrosse notches first shutout in program history

FLC blanks RMAC newcomer UCCS

In nine seasons and 117 previous games, the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team had never done what it did Thursday,

The Skyhawks faced the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions for the first time in program history. But that wasn’t the history of note, as Fort Lewis earned a 19-0 shutout win. It was the first shutout victory the Skyhawks have ever recorded.

The goalie duo of Alyssa Spencer and Daris Wienk combined to make seven saves to preserve the clean sheet. Spencer, a Durango High School alumna and reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week, was credited with the win after playing the entire first half. She made five of the seven saves.

Taylor Cabrera, Brooke Galle and Ryann Pierce all scored three goals for FLC (6-5, 6-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). Delaney Benson, Nikki Fry, Shelby Madden and Allena Wolfback had two goals each. Rebecca Miller and Alyssa Montoya each had one goal to round out the scoring.

Fry added three assists for a team-high five points. Montoya also had three assists, and Madden added two. Cabrera, Galle and Miller each had one goal.

Benson snagged a team-high five ground balls. Cabrera led the team with four draw controls.

FLC outshot the Mountain Lions 33-7 and caused seven turnovers. The Skyhawks also dominated ground balls, 26-12.

UCCS (4-8, 0-7 RMAC) has a women’s varsity lacrosse program for the first time this year. Though the team has yet to win an RMAC game, it was the first time they had been shut out all season.

Next up for the Skyhawks is a trip to Denver to face No. 15 Regis on April 22. Regis (11-1, 5-0 RMAC) is currently second in the league standings behind Lindenwood (12-0, 6-0 RMAC). The Rangers beat FLC 16-8 in Durango in March.
