Nordic Center releases winter race schedule
The Nordic Center at Purgatory announces the 2013-14 schedule for Nordic ski races plus a new Fat Bike category.
The Coke Series races will take place Dec. 28, Jan. 11 and Feb. 15. The Durango Langlauf will be Jan. 25.
Entry fee for the Coke races is $8 for juniors and $15 for adults. The cost for the Durango Langlauf is $10 for juniors and $25 for adults. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on race days with races starting at 10 a.m.
“Each race has a theme, music, awards and food,” said Jessie Kileen, Durango Nordic Ski Club board member. “We want to make these races fun for athletes and spectators alike.”
The Durango Nordic Ski Club is a nonprofit that runs the Nordic Center at Purgatory and a race program for junior cross-country skiers ages 6 to 19. DNSC embraces skiers of all abilities, from those interested in recreational pursuits to racers aspiring for Junior World Cup racing or the Olympics. DNSC teaches classic and skate-skiing techniques.
The Nordic Center at Purgatory has 20 kilometers of ski trails groomed daily for classic and skate skiing, as well as separate snowshoe trails. The center is across the highway from Durango Mountain Resort, about a third of a mile north of the DMR entrance. The center offers equipment rentals for classic skiing, skate skiing and snowshoeing for both kids and adults.
