100 years ago: “Mrs. J. A. Coppinger and daughter, Miss Gladys, of North Durango went up to the summer camp at Pine Ridge where Mr. Coppinger has his summer headquarters for his large sheep interests.”
75 years ago: “The first day of the Spanish Trails Fiesta opened with slightly cloudy prospects but the sun finally dispersed the fleecy rascals and the parade was held in all its beauty and gaiety.”
50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Silverton News, “Rainy and cool most every day, quite attractive to those from areas that have the most heat in August.”
25 years ago: “It’s a veritable feast for the senses. The aroma of baking bread mingles with the pungent stench of cow manure. Teenage queens dressed head to toe in pastel lace-and-satin western wear swirl among tables lined with brightly colored 4-H projects. Visitors stroll past rows of canned cherries and knitted sweaters, hands crammed with watermelon slices and corn on the cob. It’s the La Plata County Fair – and this year it is bigger and better than ever.”
