The bridge at 32nd Street to connect the Animas River Trail has become a topic not only highly discussed but one that has led to additional meetings and discussions.
Before I sat to write this letter to the editor, I decided I needed to become more informed; I attended one meeting with our mayor, Melissa Youssef, and have attended the meetings held by the Parks and Rec Department, and do feel much more informed.
I am now aware there’s discrepancy between the authorities about why we really need the bridge(s). I have listened to some very intelligent and concerned people on both sides. I have come away knowing that the Parks and Rec Advisory Board has already approved this project and the building bidding process has been underway and will end on Mach 24.
It is in the hands of the City Council to approve the spending of this large sum of money for this large bridge. It is time for this decision to come back to those of us who are paying for the bridge.
Spend additional money to hold a special vote. Let the community really participate.
Cathy Metz has said at the meetings that 93% of Durango uses the Animas River Trail – so allow 100% of Durango to decide this project. We have supplied the funds through the voting of the tax increase all those years ago.
Put this in our hands so that we can all live with the outcome.
