And the West is History

100 years Ago: “The Graden Mercantile Co. of Durango had decided to put in a pork packing plant of sufficient capacity to care for all the hogs that will be raised in this section for several years to come.” – Farmington Times

75 years ago: “Eleven deer had been registered at the Gardenswartz Sporting Goods Store, all shot in this territory. In addition to the deer, L.F. Young of Durango reported shooting a large mountain lion on the Hermosa and Lloyd Green brought in a 100-pound bear, shot near Rockwood.”

50 years ago: “People in the Durango area have experienced one of the craziest years on record for weather, a year in which extremes have been recorded in the winter, spring and summer seasons, and a fall record, which stood for 30 years, is about to be surpassed. If frost holds off another two days, the existing record of frost-free days until Oct. 13, established 30 years ago, will fall, according to W.W. Davies, veteran Durango weather observer.”

25 years ago: “Deborah Uroda, the media relations manager for Purgatory Ski Resort and former reporter at the Durango Herald, accepted the job of college relations director for Fort Lewis College.”
