Bobcats baseball gets defensive

Ignacio edges Pagosa Springs for its third victory this season

Some timely offense and the kind of defense head coach Lupe Huerta had been looking for led the Ignacio High School baseball team to victory Thursday.

The Bobcats (3-8) topped Pagosa Springs 3-2 on Thursday in Pagosa Springs, and Huerta said defense had a lot to do with it.

“We played well. ... They finally played the defense that we’ve been working on,” Huerta said.

Paco Mounts struck out five Pirates to pick up the victory. Isaac Peña allowed one run in the seventh but shut the door from there to pick up the save for the Bobcats.

Peña also led the way for Ignacio offensively. He had a triple, a double and drove in a pair of runs for the Bobcats.

“They just played what they’re capable of doing,” Huerta said.

Ignacio will head to Nucla at 11 a.m. Saturday for a doubleheader.
