Letters: Editorial on Bernie Sanders was unfair

Your editorial about Bernie Sanders was, in my opinion, ill-conceived (“

You state he claims “that the source of all our problems is wealth. And corporations.” What the senator actually did point out, tirelessly, is not that wealth per se is bad but that in this country there is an egregiously large and growing income and wealth disparity between those at the top and everyone else, especially those at the bottom. His opinion that this disparity is unjustifiable is arguable, to be sure; I agree with it, perhaps you do not.

His argument that corporations do not shoulder their fair share of the national tax burden also is arguable, but this is a far cry from claiming that corporations in and of themselves are a major source of societal ills. And your assertion that economic injustice was his only issue is, again, simply false. Sanders had clearly stated positions on a wide variety of issues, Medicare for All being a prominent example.

Another alleged sin of this democratic socialist is instilling in young people enthusiasm and a desire to participate in the political process. Yes, voting percentages of the young are indeed lamentable – but I suspect ridiculing them for otherwise participating in political activities is not carefully calculated to encourage them to vote.
