Animas High School to host orientations

All ninth-grade Animas High School students will have student orientation from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Monday , from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 20 when they will have early release.

All 10th-grade students will have student orientation from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 20, when they also will be released early. The 11th- and 12th-grade Ospreys will have student orientation from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Aug. 20. Regular classes will begin for all students Aug. 21.

Parent orientations are required for all grade levels and will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday for new families and from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21 for returning families. Parent orientations take place on campus and will provide families with important information about the year.

Space Camp to be discussed Thursday

Danny Jaques, Space Camp Hall of Fame member and Pine River Community Learning Center science teacher, will give a presentation about the Space Camp in Alabama and Space Camp in the country of Turkey at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave. in Ignacio.

Students interested in going to Space Camp in June 2015 should attend.

Miller teacher seeking speakers

Miller Middle School eighth-grade humanities teacher Ed Whritner is planning a project for his students producing one or two publications.

One being a graphic novel and the other a “cookbook-style” book, both based on the American Revolution. Whritner is seeking local professionals who could speak to his classes about the process of researching and compiling these types of products.

eSchool currently registering students

The Southwest Colorado eSchool is registering students for the 2014-15 school year which starts Monday.

Student orientations will take place in three locations: Dolores on Tuesday, Durango on Aug. 20 and Pagosa Springs on Aug. 21.

The school is an online middle school and high school serving all districts in the Southwest Colorado. With learning centers in Durango and Dolores, the eSchool has a regional support system and also allows for blended learning plans with regional schools.

Gateway College offers diploma program

Students who have dropped out of school or are behind for their age and grade and will not graduate on time and are between the ages of 17 and 20 have a second chance to earn a high school diploma.

The Gateway to College program based at Southwest Colorado Community College gives students the chance to get back on track toward earning a diploma and college credits simultaneously. The final information session for the fall semester will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 in Room 105 in the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio.

Columbine Christian to hold social

Columbine Christian is kicking of the 2014-2015 school year with an ice cream social at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

The school will provide the ice cream and participants should bring their favorite topping to share. Enrollment is open as the school has limited availability left for the 2014-15 school year.

Schools ask parents to bring supplies

Elementary schools in Durango School District 9-R will offer an opportunity to meet teachers, tour buildings and bring in school supplies.

Parents can come to any of the schools from 8 to 9 a.m. Aug. 22. Teachers will be there, and classrooms will be available to drop off supplies so people do not have to bring everything on the first day of school.

Families of Park Elementary School have additional time from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22 to tour the school and meet teachers.

School district 9-R to host registration

Durango School District 9-R will host a district-wide registration for the 2014-15 school year from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at all schools.

When people arrive to register, they will be asked for their child’s birth certificate, immunization information and a utility bill that shows proof of residency.
