GM recalling 51,640 SUVs for defective fuel gauges

DETROIT – General Motors is recalling 51,640 SUVs because the fuel gauges may show inaccurate readings.

The recall involves the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia from the 2014 model year. All of the affected SUVs were built between March 26 and Aug. 15 of 2013.

GM says the engine control module software may cause the fuel gauge to read inaccurately. GM says dealers will reprogram the software for free, starting immediately.

Condoleezza Rice backs out of commencement

NEW BRUNSWICK – Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has backed out of delivering the commencement address at Rutgers University after protests by some faculty and students about her role in the Iraq war.

Rice said in a statement Saturday that she informed Rutgers President Robert Barchi that she was declining the invitation to speak at the graduation.

The school’s board of governors had voted to pay $35,000 for her appearance at the May 18 ceremony. Rutgers was also planning to bestow Rice with an honorary doctorate.

Top attorney supports gay marriage, but defends ban

LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said Saturday he supports allowing same-sex couples to wed but will continue defending his state’s 2004 ban on gay marriages in court.

McDaniel, a Democrat serving his final year as the state’s top attorney, became the first statewide official in Arkansas to back same-sex marriage.

Voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman, but that ban and others nationwide are facing legal challenges.

Actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr., star of ‘The FBI,’ dies at 95

LOS ANGELES – Efrem Zimbalist Jr., the son of famous musical parents who established his own lasting celebrity in two of television’s most popular series, “77 Sunset Strip” and “The F.B.I.,” died Friday at age 95.

Zimbalist’s stunning good looks and cool, deductive manner made him the ideal star as the hip private detective ferreting out Hollywood miscreants in “77 Sunset Strip,” which aired from 1958 to 1964. As soon as that show ended, he segued seamlessly into “The F.B.I.” which aired from 1965 to 1974.

Subway rail that snapped in derailment was new

NEW YORK – The subway rail that snapped and caused a train to derail, injuring 19 passengers and stranding hundreds underground, was installed just weeks before the accident, the Metropolitan Transit Authority said Saturday.

The rail that broke underneath a train in Queens on Friday morning was manufactured in the U.S. in November and installed in March.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
