The Durango High School boys soccer team spent the weekend in Pueblo, and the Demons left a trail of destruction behind after two days against Pueblo Centennial and Pueblo Central.
Durango shut out what was a 10-1 Centennial team 3-0 Friday before delivering a demoralizing 10-0 beatdown to the crosstown Pueblo Central team Saturday. The thumping took just over one half, as the Demons scored eight first-half goals and closed the game out with a 10-goal mercy rule shortly into the second half. The win was DHS’ eighth in a row.
“It was another really good weekend for us,” Durango head coach Dalon Parker said. “We just came out and played our brand of soccer. It’s been a great run for the boys, and we’re getting stronger as the season goes on.”
Elijah Fenton had a hat trick to lead the Demons attack Saturday. Logan Fullington and Jack Beattie had two goals, while Garret Krispin, Rodrigo Morales and Juan Tejada added one each.
Morales also led the Demons with two assists.
Durango was so dominant, goalkeeper Trey Furnas recorded his eighth shutout of the season without being tested by a single shot.
The Demons will try to stretch the streak to nine with a 5 p.m. Friday match at Montrose. Durango won the first matchup 2-0 at Riverview Sports Complex. Next Saturday, DHS will look to avenge the season’s only loss in a 11 a.m. rematch at Fruita Monument.
Though Bayfield controlled much of Saturday’s match against Alamosa (6-5-1, 6-4-1 3A Intermountain League), a breakaway goal cost them in the end.
The Wolverines (4-5-2, 3-5-1 IML) took 10 corner kicks to zero for the Mean Moose and doubled up the opponents in shots on goal, but a 51st minute goal from Alamosa’s Moises Juarez was the game-winning strike.
Cross CountryThe Durango High School boys and girls varsity cross country runners got a much-needed rest this weekend, but the Demons still won.
With a full squad of junior-varsity participants, Durango’s boys and girls still outran the other teams at Saturday’s Montezuma-Cortez Ancient Trails Invitational 5K.
Led by freshman Logan Moore’s third-place time of 18 minutes, 48.97 seconds, the Demon boys took first with 55 points. Mancos was second, the host Panthers were third and Bayfield took fourth.
The DHS junior varsity girls did the same, and stayed unbeaten on the season with a dominant win in which three DHS girls finished in the top six.
“It was another great day at the races,” Durango head coach David McMillan said. “The work ethic has been fantastic, and with the talent we have coming up, the program is setup for success for years to come.”
Moore was the top freshman in the race and was followed by DHS’ Ethan Holst (19:33), who finished ninth, and Caleb Gerst (19:37) who came in 10th. Logan Zick and Ben Bates finished 17th and 18th to round out the scoring for Durango.
On the girls side, Kaylan Wait (23:20) and Claudia Luthy (23:25) came in third and fourth to lead the Demons to victory. Kristen Slade came in sixth, Rebecca Bowers was 11th and Zoe Fuer was 15th.
The Bayfield High School girls’ third-place run was led by a second-place individual finishing time of 23:13 by senior Bridget Goddard. Freshman Claire Hufnagel was 10th, and Amber Johnson placed 13th.
Volleyball
The Durango volleyball team hosted Montrose on Saturday morning, and the Demons (7-8, 3-2 5A/4A Southwestern League) dropped the match in three closely contested sets.
Montrose (11-4, 4-1 SWL) won the first set 25-20 and edged out the Demons 25-22 in the second game. The Indians took the third set 25-20.
Durango will get another crack against Montrose, this time on the road, at 6 p.m. Friday.
