Family believes Stewart lost temper in fatal crash

The parents of a sprint car driver struck and killed last year by Tony Stewart believe a wrongful death lawsuit is the only way to hold the NASCAR star accountable.

Pamela and Kevin Ward Sr. said Friday on “Good Morning America” they want “justice” for their 20-year-old son.

Kevin Ward Jr. was killed last August at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park when he exited his car under caution in an apparent attempt to confront Stewart. As Ward Jr. walked down the track, he was struck by Stewart’s car.

Smith snags win No. 1 this year in the Xfinity series

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Regan Smith bumped his way past Alex Tagliani in the Carousel a turn from the finish Saturday to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Driving for JR Motorsports, Smith raced to his first victory of the year and fifth overall.

Tagliani and defending champion Chris Buescher had the two strongest cars early, but both elected to pit on the eighth lap when the first of a track-record eight cautions flew. The leaders pitted a final time just beyond the midway point on lap 43 during the fifth yellow.

Smith, second a year ago on the 2.258-mile road course, was an equal to Tagliani and Buescher at mid-race. He took over the lead in the pits, just beating Tagliani by a fender. Tagliani caught Smith on Lap 61, but the Canadian road racer couldn’t hold him off on the last lap.

Teen cards a bogey-free round for a 5-shot lead

PORTLAND, Ore. – Canadian teen Brooke Henderson opened a five-stroke lead Saturday in the Cambia Portland Classic, shooting a 7-under 65 at Columbia Edgewater.

The 17-year-old Henderson is trying to join Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson as the only players to win an LPGA Tour title before turning 18.

On a warm, calm day, Henderson made seven birdies in her bogey-free round. Henderson, who will turn 18 in September, tied the tournament 54-hole record of 19-under 198.

Bonds says he deserves Hall of Fame after acquittal

SAN FRANCISCO – Legally cleared at last, Barry Bonds is unconcerned with everybody else’s thoughts: He’s a Hall of Famer. Hands down.

There is a huge “weight lifted” off the home run king’s shoulders since federal prosecutors dropped what was left of their criminal case against him last month after a nearly decade-long steroids prosecution.

Bonds spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday in his first interview since the government’s motion by the U.S. Department of Justice announcing Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. would not ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the appellate decision that overturned Bonds’ obstruction of justice conviction.

Bears’ first-round receiver needs surgery on left shin

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – One day after injured Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White started running on grass for the first time at training camp, he felt pain and knew he faced a worst-case scenario.

White will have surgery on his left shin to repair a stress fracture and will start the regular season on the physically unable to perform list after rest and therapy failed to cure shin pain he first had in June in organized team activities.

White, the former West Virginia player drafted seventh overall, will have a rod put in the tibia to stabilize the leg. It’s possible he could miss the entire season, but the Bears are holding out hope he can return for the second half of the season.
