Firefighters climb stairs to FLC to honor 9/11 victims

Upper Pine Fire, Durango Fire and Farmington Fire personnel participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Tuesday morning. The firefighters climbed the Durango Sky Steps to Fort Lewis College as a tribute to the 343 firefighters lost on Sept. 11, 2001 in the collapse of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

The 2018 Colorado 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is part of a national program of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. It is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who gave their lives so that others might live. Each participant pays tribute to FDNY firefighters by climbing a resemblance of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.

"The climb not only remembers the sacrifice of our FDNY brothers, but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others," wrote Bruce Evans, the chief of Upper Pine Fire.

Unistaff and and Wayne Walters, an Upper Pine River Fire Board Member, made a donation to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation on Tuesday in their memory.
