9-R superintendent’s round table to meet
The Durango School District 9-R Superintendent’s Round Table will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the school district office, 201 E. 12th St.
The group will discuss priorities, share detailed data about current spending and seek community comment about deficit cutting. A proposed school calendar also will be presented at this time.
Parking will be available in the rear of the building.
Animas Valley school hosts farmers market
Gala Gaines and her fifth-grade class at Animas Valley Elementary School are opening a farmers market as part of their economics unit.
They will sell vegetables from their Learning Garden before and after school from Tuesdays to Thursdays.
College representatives to visit Durango High
These college admissions representatives will visit Durango High School in the counseling center:
Montana State University at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The University of Colorado, Boulder, at 9 a.m. Oct. 9.
Interested students should sign up in the DHS counseling center. Passes will be sent to the student the day of the visit.
Title VII to host feast Oct. 10
Title VII outreach educators Teri Nuhn and Lucinda Long-Webb invite all Native American families to join them for a welcome-back feast from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Miller Middle School.
Families with students of all ages are welcome. A back-to-school blessing will be performed by Diné/Navajo medicine man Paul Long Sr. There will be activities, cultural music and homemade food. There also will be a presentation by a guest speaker from Lego Robotics.
Elementary school families are asked to bring traditional stews, and middle school and high school families should bring tortillas, fry bread or other traditional bread.
Ignacio school board changes meeting date
The Ignacio School District School Board’s October meeting has been changed to Oct. 16.
A work session will take place at 5:30 p.m., and the board meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
Native American policies to be discussed
The Ignacio School Board and the Southern Ute Indian Tribal Council invite parents of Native American students in the Ignacio School District to attend the Ignacio School District Indian Policies and Procedures meeting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Ignacio Middle School commons area.
Dinner will be provided. Parents are encouraged to share ideas and concerns. Participants will receive information about the collaboration between the school and the Tribal Educational Department to help students be successful.
All parents and guardians of Native American children in the Ignacio School District are invited.
Animas High School announces events
Animas High School will host these events:
A parent coffee will take place at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave. Parents will have the opportunity to talk with Head of School Jake Lauer, ask questions and learn about AHS topics. In addition, there will be an opportunity to volunteer for other services, including fundraising and special events.
Sara Price’s freshman humanities class will exhibit its “Socialization and Identity Mask” project from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
The freshman physics students in Dave Heerschap’s class will launch rockets at 5 p.m. Oct. 10 at the fairgrounds.
The 11th-grade humanities students of Ashley Carruth will present “Morality and Politics of Justice” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Durango Joe’s at 1125 South Camino del Rio and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Durango Joe’s at 732 E. College Drive.
Continuing education available at FLC
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“Entrepreneurial Business Basics” will be taught by Marc Katz, co-founder of Mercury. Katz will share what he has learned. Participants may bring their business ideas for evaluation and planning. The cost is $69 for six classes Thursday evenings from Oct. 10 to Nov. 21. There will not be class Oct. 24.
“Local Medicinal Plants” will be held Friday evenings from Oct. 11 to 25. Herbal Educator Anna-Marija Helt will present facts and folklore about a dozen medicinal plants. She will go into detail about their indications and contraindications, how and when to harvest and how to prepare them for use. The cost is $59 for three classes.
“Retirement Planning 101: How to Develop Your Retirement Plan Properly” will be taught by Roger O’Keefe on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Oct. 8 to 17. Students will learn how to properly grow and protect one’s nest egg during current and future economic scenarios and how to effectively manage caregiving, long-term care and life-resource planning. Students will receive the New Creative Retirement Education Series for follow-up home use. The cost is $69 for four classes.

The Liberty School announces events

The school is accepting dyslexic, gifted or twice exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) students for enrollment this year.
The school will offer testing for signs of dyslexia Oct. 26 at a Rotary-subsidized fee of $50. Availability is limited.

Master of Social Work program available
Applications are being accepted for the Master of Social Work degree program offered in Durango by the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work.
The next program will begin in fall 2014. An information session for prospective students will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Oct. 19 at The Commons Building in Room No. 207, 701 Camino del Rio.
This two-year program is offered at reduced tuition with classes Fridays and Saturdays. Any student who has a liberal arts degree, a bachelor’s degree in social work or is a junior at Fort Lewis College is eligible for the program.

After-school science program to be held
Durango Discovery Museum’s Sudden Science program will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursdays at the museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.
The program provides after-school science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming for elementary students in grades three to six. The program covers topics including states of matter, anatomy and physiology, genetics, electricity and magnetism, natural sciences, engineering, climatology and more. The cost is $60 per month.

Space Camp trip to Turkey available
Danny Jaques, Pine River Community Learning Center teacher and Space Camp Hall of Fame member, will lead a group of students to Space Camp in Turkey.
The trip is scheduled for June 21 to July 1, 2014. Jaques has secured 12 scholarships from Space Camp Turkey and students will need to pay for transportation.
Space Camp Turkey is in Izmir, Turkey. Jaques will give a presentation about Space Camp and Space Camp Turkey at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Pine River Community Learning Center, 535 Candelaria Drive in Ignacio, as part of the kick-off of International Observe the Moon Night.
