Intolerance can be solved with education

The tone of “

Changing a culture of intolerance requires more than listening to a Republican or a Democrat. Intolerance is a culture of distrust, of wanting to prove a point, of seeing outsiders as enemies.

Political intolerance and hate aren’t about Trump or about disgruntled voters’ responses to him. Trump is a sign of how much hate we’ve all been living in for a long time, how much we’re willing to tolerate. “Trump” is just a four-letter word at this point that stands in for all of the things Democrats and Republicans hated about each other already.

What would reduce the amount of hate in La Plata County?

Educating voters about poverty. Educating voters about social issues. Educating voters about climate change, and about where to find accurate sources of news media. Promoting a culture of caring, in which citizens see themselves as being responsible for tackling the vast socioeconomic disparities in our region.

There are too many people who hold obstinately to views without examining facts, and there are not enough people working to be part of solutions.
