San Juan Mountains Association will offer a two-day map-and-compass class that will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on May 3 at Durango Public Lands Center, 15 Burnett Court, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 5 at Animas Mountain trailhead, located at the dead-end of West Fourth Avenue and 33rd Street.
Those who attend will learn how to read topographical maps and be introduced to basic compass skills, such as how to calculate declination, shooting a bearing, and how to calculate a bearing from a map on May 3 at the Public Lands Center, and apply what they learned in the field on May 5 on Animas Mountain.
Participants must attend both days of the class and are responsible for bringing their own compass.
The class is free and registration is required.
