Why did Rep. Scott Tipton vote to shut down the government again when he knows the crushing effect on his district?
My recollection is he cost the Durango area several million dollars in the 2013 shutdown. Think about that. Our congressman votes to intentionally hurt his constituents and his district’s economy.
And why? For a boondoggle wall that will likely never be built but certainly not for at least a decade. How does that solve Trump’s imagined crisis along the southern border today? Of course, it doesn’t.
The majority of Americans don’t want the costly boondoggle wall.
Fact is, most of the land east of El Paso to the Gulf of Mexico is privately owned. Seems odd that Tipton would support seizing people’s private property to build a wall. Let’s not forget local county residents pursued an unsuccessful petition to oust a county commissioner over their own property rights. I’d guess many, if not most, voted for Tipton.
Durango is home to almost 400 federal employees and hundreds more in the surrounding counties. They operate our parks, keep our water clean, prepare for fighting fires and hunt down bad guys. This shutdown is having another serious effect on our economy.
So, again, why does Tipton support a boondoggle wall rather than his own constituents?
I was hopeful we would get rid of him in 2018 but alas. When 2020 comes around, let’s make sure he can’t intentionally hurt our area again.
