Enrollment is open at Mountain Middle

At Mountain Middle School, enrollment for next year’s sixth, seventh and eighth grades is open through Feb. 29.

The lottery will take place March 2.

Enrollment forms for fourth and fifth grades for 2017 are also being accepted.

FLC students to talk about archival process

The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a program and demonstration called “Archival Processing: A Living Lab” from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the center’s Lyceum classroom.

This program is free and open to the public.

Students from the fall 2015 class will discuss the process of organizing an archival collection and will present their outlook on preserving history for the future.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School announces these events:

Peter Van Buskirk will present “The Admission Game” to AHS juniors from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday. He will talk about how college admissions decisions are made.

The School Excellence Committee will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday at AHS.

An AHS information session for prospective students and families will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. Students, staff members and parents will share their perspectives on what makes AHS a unique and excellent educational choice in the community. Information sessions will also be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 27 at the public library and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 9 at AHS. Shadow days take place every Thursday. Prospective students and families are encouraged to attend public exhibitions because these provide opportunities to see examples of student work.

Student-led conferences will be held Feb. 24 after school. The conferences are individually scheduled and required for all ninth- and 10th-graders. In addition, juniors who are not in good academic standing or who have not completed all preparation for their LINK internships are required to participate in these conferences.

AHS is seeking community members who have experience in finance and project management as the school prepares for the next phase of its development: designing, funding and moving into a permanent 21st-century facility. Community members can contact the board by emailing board@animashighschool.com.

Music in Mountains to present event

Music in the Mountains will present the “School Music Extravaganza!” at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Miller Middle School sponsors fundraiser

Miller Middle School is conducting a penny drive to benefit Pennies for Patients, a society that helps children who have leukemia and lymphoma.

The drive will continue through Friday.

Miller students can bring in pennies to benefit their grade level.

Life-Long Learning to address Africa

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Africa: The Good, the Bad and Finding Hope” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130.

The lecture is free and open to everyone.

Africa south of the Sahara is rarely mentioned in the U.S. media, except when bad things happen. During the last two decades, the region’s economy has been growing rapidly, and the future looks increasingly hopeful.

Ron Garst, provost emeritus of the National Intelligence University, Washington, D.C., will discuss why the future looks bright. Garst is also a former Peace Corp volunteer in Nigeria, a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Nairobi and an intelligence research analyst for the CIA.

Chemist to lecture at Fort Lewis College

On Thursday and Friday, world-renowned chemist Richard Zare will visit Fort Lewis College to offer two lectures.

The first lecture, called “Human Alcoholysis: How Fast the Action of Alcohol is on the Human Body,” will be held at 4:45 p.m. Thursday in the FLC Chemistry Hall, Room 130.

The second lecture will be at 3:45 p.m. Friday, also in Room 130 of the Chemistry Hall, and is titled “Fun with H2.”

Both presentations are free and open to everyone.

Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science at Stanford University and a graduate of Harvard University. He has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University and the University of Colorado.

9-R invites public to budget meeting

The public is invited to a budget session hosted by Durango School District 9-R from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane.

The session will provide information about where school funding comes from and how it is spent.

Potluck scheduled for Native Americans

The Title VII program will hold a potluck feast for Native American students and their families from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Big Picture to host informational night

Durango Big Picture High School will host an informational night for parents/guardians and students interested in attending in fall 2016.

The session will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the school, 215 East 12th Street.

DHS orchestra, band to play night of music

Durango High School Orchestra and Concert Band will host a free evening of music for their “Night at the Movies” concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at the DHS Auditorium.

St. Patrick’s Day party set for Sunnyside

Sunnyside Elementary School will hold its St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza from 5 to 8 p.m. March 12 at Sunnyside Elementary School.

Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 students and free for children 5 and younger.

Leprechaun Land admittance is $5 and gives kids games to play including Plinko, bingo, face painting and more.
