Registration for the 2014-15 school year continues. Students interested in attending AHS can call 247-2474, ext. 2307.
Members of the Class of 2014 were awarded $45,000 in combined scholarships from the BPO Elks Lodge, National Hispanic Merit Award, Greenhouse Scholars, PEO Star, Seimens Challenge, La Plata Energy Council, Colorado Merit Scholarship and the Methodist Thrift Store.
An all-school rafting trip will be held at 2 p.m. June 14 at Mild to Wild, 50 Animas View Drive. The cost is $15 for AHS students. The raft trip will be followed by a family potluck from 5 to 7 p.m. at Santa Rita Park. Students with a last name starting with A-H should bring salads or appetizers, I-S a main dish and T-Z a dessert. Water and paper goods will be provided.
A Campus Work Day will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. July 8. Animas students, faculty, families and community members are welcome. Treats will be provided.
Families being sought for exchange programs
ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking local host families for international high school boys and girls.
These students are 15 to 18 years of age and are coming to the area for the upcoming high school year or semester. Students will arrive from their home country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the semester or school year. Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own personal spending money and expects to contribute to his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles. Families can choose their students from a variety of backgrounds, nationalities and personal interests.

Classes available to child care providers
The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, in collaboration with Southwest Colorado Child Care Resource & Referral, will offer classes for people interested in becoming licensed, home, child care providers in Colorado.
Pre-licensing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 21 and 28 at the new location of The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, 130 Rockpoint Drive, Suite C.
The cost for the two-day class is $50.

Christian academy to host meetings
Information and registration meetings for Hope Community Christian Academy will be held at 6 p.m. June 10 and 26 at Bayfield Church of Christ, 2011 Bayfield Parkway.
Hope Community is a nondenominational private Christian school for students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

Education center to offer classes
The Durango Education Center will offer summer classes for the GED and ESL program from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday from July 8 to Aug. 14.
Computer classes will take place from July 21 to Aug. 14. Times and dates will vary.

GOAL Academy to host informational meeting
GOAL Academy is a free public school opportunity for students throughout Colorado to earn an accredited Colorado Department of Education high school diploma.
GOAL combines online learning with experiential learning, on-site classes such as film study courses and chess class, self-designed electives and concurrent enrollment opportunities for students who excel and want to earn college credit while still in high school.
Academic coaches and support staff members will provide face-to-face assistance. Course assistance provided by qualified content specialists is available online from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Students can work independently seven days a week, 24 hours per day.

Head Start program accepting enrollment
Southern Ute Montessori Head Start and Early Head Start are currently accepting enrollment for the 2014-15 school year.
The programs serve children 3 to 5 years old and children 6 weeks to 3 years old, including children with special needs.
The program is free, regardless of income, for qualifying families. All ethnicities are welcome.
Qualifying families must live within the exterior boundaries of the Southern Ute Reservation and the Ignacio School District or within this section of Bayfield: south of U.S. Highway 160 between County Road 509 and County Road 526/523.

Culinary arts classes to begin in August
Culinary arts classes will begin this fall in Durango as the result of a collaboration between Manna Soup Kitchen and Southwest Colorado Community College.
The 16-credit certificate will cover beginning production and baking at the new Manna Training and Resource Center building, 1100 Avenida del Sol, which has a fully equipped commercial kitchen. Those completing all the classes will earn a college certificate in Beginning Production and Baking from the community college.
Students will be eligible for financial aid,and will gain workplace skills to work in cooking, baking, dining room management, bar and lounge management, and institutional food-service supervision.
Classes will start Aug. 18, and run from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday for 16 weeks. The academic program will meet the requirements of the accreditation by the American Culinary Federation.
Applicants to the culinary arts program will need to have a high school diploma or GED. Applications are being accepted at the college, 701 Camino del Rio. For more information, call 247-2929, ext. 7211.
