La Plata County policy for drone use to be presented

Tom McNamara with the Office of Emergency Management gets ready to fly the department’s new drone as director Butch Knowlton looks on in early December north of Durango. La Plata County commissioners will take public comment Tuesday about the county’s official use of drones.

La Plata County will hold an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the county administration building, 1101 East Second Ave., to present the draft policy for county use of unmanned aerial systems, or drones.

La Plata County proposes to use its drones to augment critical county services, which include emergency management, law enforcement, and search and rescue operations.

The public can provide input on the draft policy.
