Pine River Times sports writer Joel Priest called it a senior night classic Thursday at Wolverine Country Stadium.
Bayfield High School freshman Mattie Moore scored in the 51st minute with an assist from sophomore Madison Wells to help send a group of seniors to a 1-0 win Thursday night in a key girls soccer match against Pagosa Springs.
BHS sophomore goalkeeper made three saves in the win to help Bayfield improve to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in league play. BHS will close the season at 11 a.m. Saturday against Crested Butte.
Thursday night’s match saw plenty of action. The Wolverines missed a penalty kick in the 10th minute. A Pagosa Springs shot in the 14th minute hit the post.
In the second half, BHS senior Peri Milner nearly scored on a throw in. She flipped and heaved a long pass roughly 30 yards, and it nearly went in the goal in the 43rd minute.
Moore’s goal came on a breakaway, and the Wolverines prevailed from there.
