A group of fifth-graders from Riverview Elementary School competed in the 2016 Destination Imagination Global Finals in May in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The team, named “The Chronicles of Nikki Narwhal,” finished in fifth place out of 94 global teams in the science category. The team finished second among U.S. teams behind a team from Boston. Three teams from China finished in the top three positions.
The science challenge involved camouflage techniques found in natural organisms and required creating an object that remained hidden until revealed.
The La Plata Electric Association announces the recipients of the 2016-17 La Plata Electric, John Voelker Memorial, Basin Electric Power Cooperative and Tri-State Generation and Transmission scholarships.
The 32nd annual LPEA college scholarships (four-year scholarships of up to $7,000 annually, or $28,000 for tuition, books and fees) have been awarded to Austin McCaw of Ignacio High School and Garrett Moore of Animas High School. McCaw plans to major in engineering at Fort Lewis College. Moore is heading to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix to study mechanical engineering and business.
Michael Kuhl, who earned his degree through Rocky Mountain Digital Academy in Pagosa Springs, and Matthew McLaughlin of Durango High School have been awarded LPEA’s 16th annual John Voelker Memorial scholarships ($10,000 for two years of vocational training, technical school or junior college). Kuhl will attend Pueblo Community College to study business and computer engineering. McLaughlin will attend San Juan College to study welding and mechanics.
Lauren Fortney of Pagosa Springs High School received the $1,000 Basin Electric Power Cooperative Scholarship. Fortney is planning to pursue a career in hospitality and tourism at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.
Benjamin Lachelt of Durango High School and Nicholas Tarasewicz of Animas High School, each received $500 scholarships from the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association. Lachelt intends to pursue environmental studies. Tarasewicz will advance his education in mathematics and energy research at the University of Denver.
