The advent of the coronavirus pandemic is begging us to ask the question: When does the good of the many outweigh individual freedoms?
It can be a tough question for Americans, and the difficulty in answering it can be witnessed right here in Durango.
Last week, I was grocery shopping and realized that the majority of shoppers were wearing masks and gloves while no more than one or two market employees were similarly protected. When I asked the store manager why this was so, the answer I was given was, “It is up to the individual.”
I am distressed by the lack of care the store has taken for its employees as well as its customers.
If we could ask a person fighting for his or her life on a ventilator about individual rights during this pandemic, I wonder what the answer might be?
