And the West is History

100 years ago: “William Craig, the Cedar Hill merchant, returned to the thriving community after spending the night here developing on paper a bonanza in the Cave Basin district, which he proposes to work so soon as the snow that last fell has flown again, out of the proceeds of this week’s collections of old store debts.”

75 years ago: “Francis Guire suffered a broken hand while working at the Mayflower Mine near Silverton. A part of the machine on which he was working flew off and struck his hand. He is now in Durango at the home of his mother Mrs. C. W. Guire.”

50 years ago: “David Bartelt set a new Durango High School record in the shot put as he won the event with a throw of 47-11¾ at a quadrangular track meet in Kirtland. This broke the old record of 47-5½ which he had set just two days earlier at the Albuquerque relays. When the season started the school record in the event was 46-9½.”

25 years ago: “Increased patient census in February contributed to a $26,504 monthly profit for La Plata Community Hospital, but low cash flow caused bills owed by the hospital to fall 90 days late. Collections historically are low in February. Also, the hospital is experiencing low collections from bad financial months last fall when monthly losses fell to $80,000. As of today the hospital has reduced its late bills to 60 days.”
