Pub science shines on northern lights
Physicist Laura Peticolas of the University of California-Berkeley’s Space Physics Laboratory will be the guest speaker for tonight’s Pub Science at the Durango Discovery Museum. Peticolas’ presentation will focus on her studies of the aurora borealis, aka northern lights, and provide a better understanding of its relationship between the Earth and our sun.
Enjoy a brew or two and soak up some science at this casual and creative monthly lecture series. No RSVP or tickets are required, and admission is free. Doors open at 6 p.m.

DHS student chosen for national orchestra
Durango High School student Nolan Reed has been selected as a member of the 2014 Honor Orchestra of America.
Honor Orchestra of America is a program of Music for All, serving high school and middle school orchestras and string programs.
Nolan has played violin since age 8 and participated in Conservatory Music in the Mountains for the last six years. He received the Outstanding Soloist Award at the Annual Arts in the Park Music Festival in Denver in 2011. In 2012, he was chosen as concertmaster of the CU-Boulder Summer Music Academy Orchestra, and in 2013, he earned a spot in the Colorado 2013 All State Orchestra.
He has played with Four Corners Youth Symphony since 2009 and won the 2013 Four Corners Youth Symphony Concerto Competition. He also was chosen as concertmaster to lead the San Juan Symphony Youth Orchestra in its inaugural season.
Nolan is a junior at Durango High School, where he is concertmaster of the DHS Symphonic Orchestra. He also plays in the DHS Chamber Strings, DHS Jazz Ensemble I and DHS Jazz Combo. He has been a participant in San Juan Symphony Side-by-Side Concert, Solo & Ensemble, Young Artist Competition sponsored by San Juan College in Farmington, the Bach Festival and the Durango Chamber Music Academy.
Barbershoppers offer singing valentines
The Durango Barbershop singers will offer singing valentines between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.
A barbershop quartet will deliver two romantic love songs, a red carnation and a small box of chocolates to any home, event or workplace in La Plata County.
